Important information - Paddle craft include: Canoes, Kayaks, Paddleboards, Row Boats, Rowing sculls, inflatable hand powered craft. All craft using the river require a licence.

Important information - This registration form must be used to apply for a Registration Certificate for the Avon (Covering the River Avon from Alveston Weir to its confluence with the River Severn). All craft afloat on the Avon must comply with the boat safety scheme, be insured against third party risk, ANT recommends at least £3,000,000 cover including salvage costs, and display a current registration certificate.

Boat safety details

Important information - All boats operating on the Avon require a Boat Safety Scheme Certificate (BSS) or a Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) for brand new boats. This is like a boat MOT - your insurance and river licence will be invalid if you do not have a current BSS.

Only boats with no cabin, no fixed fuel and no cooking facilities (like a canoe or very basic open motor boats are exempt)

Is your craft really BSS Exempt?

In the interest of public safety, boats on the River Avon must have a valid Boat Safety Scheme Certificate (BSS). However, a certificate is not required in support of a licence application in either of the following cases.
In order to be exempt ALL 3 conditions must be met in either case 1 or case 2. Please tick conditions that apply to your craft:

The Boat (Case 1)

Is an open vessel (i.e. with all the accommodation open to the elements) (e.g a small cabin with no doors) AND
Has no gas appliances or electrical systems installed / commissioned AND
Is propelled solely by an outboard motor

Has closed accommodation but has NO ENGINE or Fuel system** AND
Has no gas appliances or electrical system installed / commissioned AND
Has no free discharge to the waterway from a toilet or holding tank (no / or decommissioned Sea Toilet)

A boat may be considered to have no engine if: (a) It has a diesel engine that has been permanently decommissioned in such a way that it cannot reasonably be put back into use AND (b) Any diesel fuel tank has had all connections, except the vent, properly sealed.

BSS Exemption Declaration – by ticking this box, Avon Navigation Trust will accept your declaration and may issue the appropriate licence on the understanding that should any of the above change a BSS certificate will be required for the craft. ANT reserve the right to arrange for an independent inspection in case of doubt. Your licence will be revoked if your declaration is found to be incorrect. *
